South Delhi by Neighbourhood: Where to Stay

South Delhi is not one place. It is a dozen neighbourhoods with different streets, different markets and very different journey times, and the best area depends on why you are here. Pick well and the city feels easy. Pick badly and you spend your trip in a cab.

Most of our homes are in South Delhi, so we know these areas well. This guide covers each one: what it is like, how it connects, and who it suits. The drive times are measured road distances from the middle of each area, on a map at a quiet time of day with no traffic. Rush hour takes longer, so use them to compare areas.

Hauz Khas

Hauz Khas is best known for the village lane, a working neighbourhood that turns into a cafe and gallery strip in the evening. Hauz Khas metro station is one of the better connected stops in South Delhi. It is a lively base for young groups and for work trips, but the lane is noisy on weekends, so ask for the quieter side of a building.

From the middle of Hauz Khas, Nehru Place is about 6 km and 9 minutes, and Connaught Place about 11 km and 13 minutes. See our Hauz Khas homes.

Greater Kailash II and East of Kailash

Greater Kailash II is made of planned blocks laid out around two large parks, with markets for both GK1 and GK2. The two halves are separate enclaves, so confirm which side of the park a home is on. East of Kailash is calmer and sits next to the Kalkaji interchange.

For work in Nehru Place, these are the closest areas we have. East of Kailash is about 1.6 km and 3 minutes from Nehru Place. Greater Kailash II is about 3.3 km and 7 minutes.

CR Park and Amar Colony

CR Park is one of the older planned colonies, known for wide tree-lined roads, large family houses and a market that stays open late. It works well for families visiting for a wedding in the neighbouring Greater Kailash and Lajpat Nagar belt. It is about 2 km and 5 minutes from Nehru Place. Amar Colony, close to Lajpat Nagar, is quieter and about 2.4 km and 6 minutes from Nehru Place.

Chhatarpur and Mehrauli

Chhatarpur is known for the private farmhouses along its roads. Our homes here are apartments, not farmhouses, and several are tagged as party places, so check the guest limit and the music rules before you book. Mehrauli is quieter and greener, with low-rise lanes and easy reach to Qutub Minar. Late-night food options thin out after 11 pm.

Both are the best of our South Delhi areas for the airport side of town. From Mehrauli, Aerocity is about 9 km and 13 minutes, and the airport’s terminal 3 about 12 km and 16 minutes. See party places in Delhi for event homes.

Vasant Kunj

Vasant Kunj is DDA flats and family colonies, close to the airport and to two big malls. There is no metro station inside Vasant Kunj; the nearest, Chhatarpur on the Yellow Line, is about 2 km from the middle of the area, so plan on cabs. It is the best South Delhi base for an early flight: from the middle of Vasant Kunj, the airport’s terminal 3 is about 9 km and 13 minutes away, and Aerocity about 6 km and 9 minutes. Lajpat Nagar, Saket and Malviya Nagar

Lajpat Nagar is a market area that never really sleeps. It is busy, central and full of shops, and it is the nearest of our areas to Moolchand Medcity. Saket and Malviya Nagar are close to Max Super Speciality Hospital. Malviya Nagar is young and social, so pick a room away from the market side if you are a light sleeper.

For a central trip, Lajpat Nagar is about 8 km and 14 minutes from Bharat Mandapam, the exhibition centre in Pragati Maidan. See stays near Moolchand and stays near Max Saket.

How to choose

• First visit and sightseeing: Hauz Khas or Mehrauli.
• Work around Nehru Place: East of Kailash, CR Park, Greater Kailash II or Amar Colony.
• Airport or an early flight: Vasant Kunj or Mehrauli.
• A hospital stay: pick by the hospital. Our hospital guide has the distances.
• A wedding or an event: CR Park for the Greater Kailash and Lajpat Nagar belt, Chhatarpur for the party-tagged homes, with approval first.
• A quiet street: Mehrauli, East of Kailash or Amar Colony.
